IE Practice 2024  CALL FOR ABSTRACTS – due 10 June 2024 (extended)

  We are pleased to announce the 2024 Interior Educators International Conference will be hosted by Northumbria University’s Interior Architecture team 21^st-22^nd November 2024, please find attached the call for submissions for the conference, addressing the theme Practice.

It will be the first Interior Educators conference held since the Covid-19 pandemic, coinciding with 10 years of Northumbria University BA(Hons) Interior Architecture Alumni, and occurs at a critical moment as we define the next 10 years of our pedagogic and practice-based landscapes on the interior and the adaptation of existing space.

Conference Call

The IE Practice 2024 Conference will provide a platform for educators, professionals, and students to explore the evolving landscape of interior and adaptive-reuse practice within our built heritage. It will invite broad discussion on three pertinent topics as a tryptic that underpins the future direction of interior education and practice.

We invite a call for abstracts under the following themes:

Adaptive Reuse

Material Reset

Creative Practice

We would like to investigate these themes and are looking for contributions for Illustrated Papers/Practice Case Studies, Photo Essays, and Artefacts in interior architecture. Contributions can come from design practice as well as academia. They could consider but are not limited to methods, theoretical positions, case studies, or concrete examples of applications, as well as success factors and challenges.

Abstracts, 500 words + images, should be submitted via the conference website by the 10 June 2024 using the abstract template www.ie-practice-2024.co.uk. Proposals should be submitted in English. Notification of acceptance by 08 July 2024.

Keynotes

We are delighted to welcome keynotes Jonathan Tuckey, Tuckey Design Studio and Lionel Devlieger, Rotor.

Jonathan Tuckey, the founder of Tuckey Design Studios, is a leading advocate for adaptive reuse and remodelling, with extensive teaching experience under the Fred Scott. His leadership at Tuckey Design Studio is marked by a commitment to transforming old structures into contemporary spaces while preserving their historical significance. With a global portfolio, the studio prioritises human-centred design, with a sustainability lens, their international team creates spaces with enduring cultural and social significance.

 Lionel Devlieger, co-founder of Rotor, Brussels, and Associate Professor at Ghent University, is a pioneering voice advocating for reuse and circularity, he integrates theory and practice to challenge norms in construction. Belgian design practice Rotor, known for innovative projects, fosters debate and transforms reclaimed elements into bespoke interiors. Lionel’s influence extends globally through teaching and influential publications, reshaping the discourse on sustainability in the built environment.
