Architectural studies are only taught at the Iceland University of the Arts (IUA). The Iceland University of the Arts is an independent, self-governing, government funded and accredited institution, founded in 1999. It is the only institution in Iceland offering university level education in the arts, design, and architecture. The Iceland University of the Arts offers instruction on a bachelor and master level in Architecture.
The Department of Design and Architecture is situated downtown Reykjavik, approximately 300 meters from the central bus station and the downtown shopping district.
55 students (45 Bachelor, 10 Master, 0 PhD), 0% of foreign students.
5 staff members (2 full-time and approx. 3 visiting lecturers and critics).
An active student association is in the department.
Foreign students are offered help in finding private accomodation.
Applicants must have completed a university entrance diploma (stúdentspróf: matriculation examination) or comparable course of study, preferrably including 30 credits from a secondary school art program. The selection is partly based on the applicants' achievement in this course of study, but primarily on the quality of the applicant's artistic portfolio.

The IUA Architecture Program is an
active member of the following organizations:
EAAE- European Association for
Architectural Education; and NBAA
– the Nordic Baltic Academy of Architecture;
and participates in the activities of Cirrus
(a team of 20 universities from all
corners of Nordic and Baltic countries
founded in 1990) and Cumulus (the European
Association of Universities and
Colleges of Art, Design and Media).
Architecture is a social practice, based on dialogues between different expertise involved in the design process.
Dialogues between students and teachers are the foundation of the education of an architect. Through engaging dialogues with our own realities, our cultures, our landscapes, our people, our experts, we develop architectural narratives: projects. Projects are consequently expressed through drawings, models, writings exhibitions, videos.
During the three years of education that lead to a BA degree in architecture, students develop different projects shifting from abstract to real, from Reykjavik to the countryside, from local to global. Each project in architecture can help us to better understand our society, create awareness on important issues, protect the public good and health, produce knowledge, create shared values, and help us imagining our common future. We use the local context of Iceland as the site for our projects and we consider the global state of the world as the umwelt for our profession
At present, no second cycle (MA, PhD)
architectural programs are offered in
Iceland. Thus, in order to receive a
professional degree, Icelandic students of
architecture must complete their studies in another country.
There is no PhD programme at this time.
