Faculty profile

The Faculty of Design Sciences of the University of Antwerp strives for a synergy between its three disciplines: architecture, conservation and restoration, and product development. Priority is given to an interdisciplinary approach to material culture, designs, and people and their surroundings.  The Faculty offers its students maximum opportunities for development so that they can become critical experts who pay attention to quality and sustainability within a wider social context. We strive to create an academic educational environment aimed at developing and integrating knowledge, skills and attitudes, thus preparing students to take responsibility in society. The Faculty aims to develop a research environment with strong national and international appeal, thus supporting research and education. It serves as a reliable research partner for industry, professionals, and the non-profit and public sectors. The Faculty of Design Sciences takes its societal role seriously, making its expertise available to society.

The Faculty of Design Sciences is located on the Stadscampus of the University of Antwerp, in the heart of Antwerp.

Bachelor of architecture

Bachelor of interior architecture

Interior Architecture = designing the human sejour

Relation User – Space + Relation Object – Space + Relation User – Object

  • focus on designing the immediate surroundings of man and shaping the relationship between the user and the space
  • the well-being of the individual is paramount

Bachelor of conservation-restoration

The education in Conservation-Restoration concentrates on the interdisciplinary aspects of the field: art history, materials science, ethics and decision-making, museum studies, collection management, preventive conservation, and conservation techniques. The study programme is designed to enable the students to focus on individual conservation projects including the research and documentation process. The competence-oriented programme consists of a well-defined balance between theoretical and practical courses, focusing on the three occupational profiles in the field of conservation: independent conserver, conservation scientist and heritage manager.

  • focus on the cultural heritage
  • recognizing international standards and responsibilities including methodology, documentation, and education needs
  • active participation in national and international research

Bachelor of product development

Through education, research and services to society, we aim to foster the student’s drive and capacities for the introduction of creative products with a notable economic added value on to the market and into society.

For this purpose, we aim for a creative management of the innovation process and a drive for entrepreneurship by means of an integrated approach of technology, market and the human environment into the design engineering process.

The Faculty of Design Sciences of the University of Antwerp offers 6 master programmes:

Master of architecture

The academic Master in Architecture focuses on an investigative mentality and on research capacities. The aim is to train people into strategic thinkers who create consistent and realizable architectural designs and additionally contribute to the architectural debate. Masters in Architecture are spatial thinkers and designers who are able to take up a responsible role in a multidisciplinary context.

Master of interior architecture

Master of urbanism and spatial planning

Urban designers and planners have the responsibility to design, to plan and develop our scarce space as careful and sustainable as possible.

We teach how to design such spatial projects, neighbourhoods, cities and regions and how to implement these designs.
